Giveaway: Nestle Family Back To School Prize Pack. Let’s Talk Snacks (9/28/11)

Congrats to winner with screen name of won! Enjoy your win!

On Monday I shared one of my resolutions for this school year. I told you all about how my family has so much to do that this year we are going to try to stick to a schedule from morning until bedtime. Do I think that will go flawlessly everyday, probably not, but I hope it will help keep us organized and me sane. If you have a schedule for morning routines, afternoon homework and practices it helps you stay in control.

Today I want to talk about another resolution for this year we are going to try to stick to when best we can. “To Treat My Kids With Fun, Creative After School Snacks” With my kids being very involved in sports and being active kids in general what they put into their bodies in their morning snack time at school and after school at home is pretty important. Sure it would be easy to let them grab a snack cake or snack pack of chips but where is the healthy and fun in that.

Snack Tips From Me To You:

  1. BE COLORFUL. Fruits and veggies have such an array of eye appeal (and they taste good too).
  2. GET CREATIVE. Sure it’s easy to throw the snack on a plate but where’s the fun in that. Make it fun by doing something like Bumps on A Log.
  3. GO WILD! Use several things together to make the snack look like an animal. Use a pear cut in half peeling up with oranges and grapefruit slices to make a Turkey.
  4. IMAGINATION IS KEY. Play hangman with crackers & cheese whiz. The crackers are the tiles, use the cheese to write letters and then use a grape for the head, celery stalk for body and baby carrots for arms and legs. You can also the crackers and cheese to play scrabble or work on math!
  5. HAND IT OVER TO THE KIDS. They are usually a lot more creative than me so put their little minds to work and let them help you figure out a new fun snack to make.

I sense us having a lot of fun this year with snacks. In fact use the scrabble and hangman ideas mentioned above you can use those to help with spelling review. Learn and snack…I think homework just got more fun and tastier!

I used to give my children a fruit and/or a crunchy (like pretzels or Wheat Thins).

I give my son apples slices or some other fresh fruit. Or a couple days a week, I’ll give him a “special” treat. I make him “trail mix” that has pretzels, raisins, chocolate chips, and one or two other things we have laying around the kitchen.
