Speak, Cook, And Dance Like A True Lad or Lass #BraveCarsLandEvent

In just a few short days, 6 to be exact, I will be headed to California and getting out of this rainy weather we are having here in “sunny” Florida. As if that isn’t enough I mentioned, I will be headed to screen 3 movies, attend a red carpet premiere, do some celeb interviews, check out the new Cars Land and all around just have a grand time. The movie myself, along with the other bloggers attending, are hitting the red carpet for is Disney/Pixar’s Brave. Here is a little more about the movie if you haven’t heard of it:

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

I have been so excited to see this movie since I saw the preview months ago. I wanted to make sure to do what I could to get into true Scottish character, after all you want to fit in right. So, I’ve done a little research. Here are some tried and true Scottish recipes for you (and me) to try *click on recipe to make larger*:

If those don’t help immerse you in Scottish culture then maybe you should try talking like a true Scotsman, here are some words and definitions to add to your everyday vocabulary:

  • BLUE WODE: A blue dye extracted from a cabbage-type plant used by inhabitants of ancient Scotland to paint their bodies
  • BRAE: Hill
  • BUNCH OF GALOOTS: Many fools
  • CRIVENS, YOU’RE FIERCE: Wow! You’re cool or ferocious or tough!
  • DANCING TATTY BOGLE: An expression that describes something outlandish or imaginary
  • DREADFUL COLLYWOBBLES: Unwanted stomachache or a bad case of the nerves
  • FOR NAUGHT: For no reason
  • FINISH WHAT HE GUDDLED IN THE FIRST PLACE: Fix, clean up or otherwise remedy something that’s been horribly mishandled.
  • GOOGLY OLD HAG: Outlandish, unattractive senior
  • IGGERY POKERY: Nonsense
  • JINGS CRIVENS HELP MA BOAB: Oh my! Exclamation of bewilderment or exasperation
  • KILT: A pleated and draped tartan fabric garment worn by Scottish men
  • LASS: Girl
  • LAD: Boy
  • LOCH: Lake
  • MANKY DOGS: Unsavory person or being

Now that we have taught you some of the basics of the Scottish speak, surely you are feeling like you could fit in easily. However if you still feel a little nervous that your Scottish friends will think you won’t fit in, it’s time to break out the one thing that speaks an international language…dance. Doing a Scottish dance will ensure no one cares how you speak or cook but you will fit right in. Here are some instructions to get you started:

There you have it, some sure fire ways to get you into Scottish mode for the upcoming release of Brave.
