Recently I had the chance to share my laundry routine as part of the laundry regimen experience on Collective Bias. I will admit I am not an avid lover of laundry. Well let me rephrase that, I don’t mind separating the clothes, putting them into the washer and transferring to the dryer, but come time to fold I would rather poke my eye out with a hot stick. Yes I hate to fold but at least I keep my clothes clean…err well I did keep up with it until my dryer turned to crap and now I have to dry ONE load for EIGHT hours! Anyways that is not the story here right now.
As part of this laundry experience team we were provided with a gift card to Wal-Mart to go stock up on our laundry needs. I am a pretty simple gal when it comes to laundry routine. Here is what my laundry routine consists of:
~ I start with separating clothes into towels, jeans, whites, lights and darks. Though sometimes I will admit to putting towels and whites or whites and lights together. I figure I really don’t use bleach so no worry about staining anything.
~ Next I turn on the decrepit washer that is like 20 years old, throw in a Purex 3-In-1 (which I love because I never have been able to use fabric softener before this). A Purex 3-in-1 is a detergent, fabric softener, and dryer sheet all in one.
~ Followed by tossing the clothes in and making sure they are even, because if not my washer gets off balance and is so loud I think maybe the neighbors could hear it.
~ Once it is finished washing I transfer it to the dryer (taking the Purex sheet out of the washer with it) and I do add a Bounce dryer sheet.
~ After drying is over, I pile it in a laundry basket and it sits until I get annoyed enough to fold the clothes in it.
I am a big user of Purex, but some other brands I catch myself gravitating toward are Tide and sometimes All Small & Mighty. As for bleach on the rare occasion that i use it, it’s always Clorox. Dryer sheets are Bounce (linked above) or Snuggle. As a reader of my blog I am asking you to give your input, as we are trying to get opinion on laundry from as many people as we can. Please answer the questions below in a comment and I look forward to hearing all your laundry routines.

Tide Free
I'm not allergic, it works, I refuse to mess with it if its not broken!
No bleach, it scares me and I don't know why I would need it.
No fabric softener. The dispenser broke a few years ago and I never looked back.
I use Bounce unscented dryer sheets.
I use Shout for stains.
I will not change, as I said before, I do watch for these items to go on sale and stock up.
I buy them at Target or HEB mostly, occasionally Walmart.
I have a top load.
I have a white laundry basket for whites/khakis and a blue basket for all colors. Then a basket in the laundry room for towels, blankets, rags, etc. So they are already separated on Sunday when its time to throw them in! I'm an odd duck who actually likes doing laundry and folding! I love having all clean clothes and knowing I can wear anything I want!!
I have absolutely no suggestions. I am a bad, bad, bad housewife and I only do laundry if there is some kind of crisis situation involved. Usually it's all Hubby. Hey, I do other things….laundry is just my very least favorite chore. I hate it even more than I hate doing dishes…and I hate dishes a LOT.
What brand of detergent do you use?
Tide Pure Essentials in White Lilac with Baking Soda… or Dreft.
What made you decide to use that brand?
I love the smell of each.
Do you use bleach when washing clothes? Why or Why not?
I use Clorox2 for towels to get rid of any mildew smell. I use regular Clorox when washing my husbands socks to keep them white and get rid of the stink. lol
Do you use fabric softner? If so, does your washer have the automatic dispenser?
Yes – Yes
Do you use dryer sheets when drying clothes? If yes, which brand do you use?
I occasionally use Bounty sheets if I run out of fabric softener.
For stubborn stains, what do you do to get them out?
Well, whenever my son has a BLOWOUT, I first rinse it and then pre-treat it with Shout. Next I pour some Clorox2 directly on the poop stain, and then I launder it with Dreft and Clorox2. It comes right out!
When shopping for laundry items, what makes you decide to purchase the ones you do?
I cannot stray from Tide because my sensitive skin itches whenever I switch. I also tend to stick with a certain scent once I find one I like for the same reason. Smell is a huge factor for me.
Will sales on detergent, softeners, bleaches, and dryer sheets make you more apt to trying something new?
No. I don't care about the price when it comes to laundry detergent, that is the one thing I "splurge" on.
Where do you usually purchase your laundry supplies from?
Usually I buy them from Walmart. Though last time I bought them from Target because I had a gift card.
What type of laundry machines do you have (Top load, front load, HE, etc)?
Our set was donated to us from a family at church when we got married. I'm not even sure what kind it is. I know we replaced the motor in the dryer and it's been working ever since (3 years)
Describe your laundry routine.
I stuff a basket with semi-like colors, throw it in and wash it on cold & gentle. Always tumble dry low. It sits in the dryer until I fold it or hang it up, that way I can re-fluff it to get rid of wrinkles if I get interrupted, which is quite often.
What are any tips/tricks you have for others to make their laundry routine have more success with stains, more ease to it, and just more enjoyable?
Hang a hook over the laundry room door and bring a stack of hangers with you when you go to get the clothes out of the dryer. It's easy to just grab a shirt, put it directly on a hanger, and hang it over the door rather than spending time folding your laundry. When you're done, grab the and stick them right into your closet.
My laundry routine is pretty dull, nothing interesting really going on there, but I did have a tip for you. If you need a new dryer, check out Craigslist. There are a ton of appliances on there for some really amazing prices and a lot of them are almost new. Half the time when people buy a new house, it comes with some of the appliances, so they end up either selling off their old ones, of keeping their existing ones and selling the ones from the new house. Dryers last for years and it's much less expensive than a department store.
You gotta stop by my blog… I've recently started MAKING my own detergent… its CHEAP & you only use ONE tablespoon – so it lasts FOREVER!!!! Seriously!
What brand of detergent do you use?
Purex and/or Tide
What made you decide to use that brand?
Tide does not irritate my son, Troy's skin. I use it on my hang dry clothing as it's always been gentle and does cause bleaching of the color after multiple washes.
Purex, is a brand I've just begun to learn about as well as it being my husbands brand of choice. It's great on his work clothes, powers out the mess he finds on his clothes after a hards day work.
Do you use bleach when washing clothes? Why or Why not?
I only use bleach here and there and it would be on the boys white socks! ewwwwwww
Do you use fabric softner? If so, does your washer have the automatic dispenser?
I love fabric softener, I love that smell in my clothes and only use Downey! Yes I have the auto dispenser in my hook up to the sink rolling washer. The laundromat has the container too where you pour in as your load starts.
Do you use dryer sheets when drying clothes? If yes, which brand do you use?
Bounce is the brand we use the most, again a hubby and boys favorite (doesn't smell "girley")
For stubborn stains, what do you do to get them out?
Zout! I've used this stuff for years, couldn't even get it here in New York some years back, in fact many years back, my grandmother would buy it by the case and send it to me. Swear by the stuff!
When shopping for laundry items, what makes you decide to purchase the ones you do?
Brands I trust, sometimes a sale, coupons.
Will sales on detergent, softeners, bleaches, and dryer sheets make you more apt to trying something new?
Depends on my mood really. I like what I know and trust and works for me.
Where do you usually purchase your laundry supplies from?
Target, Walmart
What type of laundry machines do you have (Top load, front load, HE, etc)?
Top Load
Describe your laundry routine.
Try and get the teens and 20 somethings to sort their laundry, then haul it downstairs to the basement, start a load, go back upstairs, wait 30 minutes, go back downstairs, transfer to dryer (our dryer stinks!)Start another load of wash, go back upstairs wait 45 minutes (cause our dry stinks!)go back downstairs, take load out of dryer, I try to lay them out so as not to wrinkle too badly, transfer next load, start another load – REPEAT. Yes, I get a good cardio work out, stairs (2 flights) (who needs a stairmaster) and laundry done all in the same go.
What are any tips/tricks you have for others to make their laundry routine have more success with stains, more ease to it, and just more enjoyable?
Laundry around here is like bunny rabits, it multiplies in a blink of an eye. With 3 girls 2 boys at that age, never just one outfit for the day, it has to be several. It feels like I'm always doing laundry of some sort. If I get behind, off to the laundromat we go UGH! Pre-treat, Pre-treat, Pre-treat is my suggestion for stains, at least the one's you know about.
I love clean clothes and the smell of clean fresh clothes, it's the doing it all that drives me insane!
Alright, this has thrilled me cause I'm a laundry junkie! Here we go!
What brand of detergent do you use? Right now, Arm and Hammer
What made you decide to use that brand? My husband has very sensitive skin and it works best.
Do you use bleach when washing clothes? On my whites Why or Why not? I have 3 males in this house and they make socks…disgusting! lol
Do you use fabric softner? No again because of Mr. Itchy Skin. If so, does your washer have the automatic dispenser?
Do you use dryer sheets when drying clothes? Yes! If yes, which brand do you use? Bounce
For stubborn stains, what do you do to get them out? I use spray n wash and oxi clean
When shopping for laundry items, what makes you decide to purchase the ones you do? Purity and smell
Will sales on detergent, softeners, bleaches, and dryer sheets make you more apt to trying something new? I have to be very careful, but it is a pure line, I will try it.
Where do you usually purchase your laundry supplies from? WalMart
What type of laundry machines do you have (Top load, front load, HE, etc)? Top Load
Describe your laundry routine. I "try" really hard to do at least 3 loads a day so I don't get behind, but Sunday is my catch up day.
What are any tips/tricks you have for others to make their laundry routine have more success with stains, more ease to it, and just more enjoyable? I'm going to try making my own laundry detergent! Its supposed to be skin safe and very $$ saving!
I also have a decrepit washer. I use whatever laundry products are on sale or that I have coupons or rebate forms for. I don't use bleach or fabric softener, I'm too lazy for that stuff. I have a top load washer and front load dryer. the dryer eats my clothes and pulls all the freakin hooks off my pants and bras, one time so bad I thought I was going to need the tool box to unhook the stupid pants from the inside of the front loader.
a couple weeks ago I went down to the basement (thats where our machines are) and we'd had a lot of rain, well when I reached the bottom step there was a giant slug monster standing in between me and the washer/dryer. I had to call my uncle over to get rid of it.
gross.
1)I use all natural Laundry Soap from Seventh Generation OR Costco
2)No chemicals that can harm our environment or my childrens skin
3)Only use non cholorine bleach by Seventh Generation
4) Ah Fabric Softner-again only the natural stuff! and yes I have an automatic despinser
5)dryer sheets sometimes-UGH I use Bounce-not natural!
6)Oxy Clean Laundry stain fighter in the blue bottle IS THE BEST!
7)See #1
8) SOMTIMES I use non-natural laundry soap but not often, only if is a GREAT sale and I have a coupon!
9) Costco, Target, Wal Mart
10) No fancy machine here! Top loader!
11) A laundry routine??? What is that? When there are no more clean underwear the laundry gets done! LOL!
12) See #6
with 6 kids there is always tons of laundry to do. WE use purex always have always will. My children start helping with laundry early on and when in junior high are able to do their own
I try to do laundry as earth friendly as possible.
I use Planet detergent and Mrs. Meyer's fab softener.
Once in awhile, I will get out the bleach, but only when my whites seem really dull. But I'm not a fan because of its environmental impact.
Shout Gel is the ONLY thing that has never failed me when removing stains.
I have an older front loader, about 9 years old. Dryer is the same. I'm not very happy with it. It was given to us.
I do whites together. Towels together. Cloth diapers together. Lights, darks, and reds are all separate too.
I find if I get really behind on laundry and find myself just let it sit around without being put away, I tell myself I'm allowed one basket only. And until that one basket is washed, dried and put away. I can't do another. I can handle ONE at a time rather than looking at the big picture…or mountain
Great post! But I cant answer any of these questions as my wife does all the laundry. Before you judge, I do all of the cooking and cleaning of the dishes and kitchen. Does that count for something? LOL
Hope your having a good week!
Love and Prayers,
Tim
I use what ever is the cheapest after sales and coupons. I try to stay away from store brands though.
I do this to save $
I will use bleach on white tshirts socks and underwear.
No fabric softener unless its in the soap.
I use whichever dryersheet was the cheepest that week. I like Arm & Hammer alot.
My husband is a mechanic. We use grease fighting dish soap on his undershirts and work clothes. And I run the washer empty before putting in a different load. Car grease, brake fluid and gas are tough but we manage.
I buy what I buy cause its on sale.
Yes! I love sales!
Pick n Save, when I go grocery shopping. Unless I have a target or walgreens coupon.
Top load
I seperate jeans and darks, whites, lights, towels. Sheets are once a weeks.
I hate laundry. I put it off til last minute. I can only think og 1 tip: use degreasing dish soap on grease stains.
I use Tide HE, and Tide HE free
I use it because it doesn't break anyone out or make them itchy
Do you use bleach when washing clothes? yes I do on the white socks….if not they would be gray!!
Do you use fabric softner? If so, does your washer have the automatic dispenser? yes and yes
Do you use dryer sheets when drying clothes? If yes, which brand do you use? yes, and it is bounce and bounce free
For stubborn stains, what do you do to get them out?use oxy clean spray and I always put a scoop of oxy clean in every load
When shopping for laundry items, what makes you decide to purchase the ones you do? trial and error…my family can only use tide anything else either gives them a rash or they are just itchy
Will sales on detergent, softeners, bleaches, and dryer sheets make you more apt to trying something new? NOPE
Where do you usually purchase your laundry supplies from? Walmart
What type of laundry machines do you have (Top load, front load, HE, etc)? Front Load HE machine
Describe your laundry routine.
routine?!?! LOL sorry, but if I don't do at least 1-2 loads a day it piles up!! so its if there is a load it goes in….but really there are the light, white, reds, darks and towel loads…and in my house that is a lot!!
What are any tips/tricks you have for others to make their laundry routine have more success with stains, more ease to it, and just more enjoyable?

What brand of detergent do you use?
I am forever trying to balance that perfect laundry soap that works miracles and is inexpensive at the same time. I alternate between what is on sale and sometimes buying those "you are are so pure you make a virgin look dirty" types of detergents. Right now it is Gain with baking soda.
What made you decide to use that brand?
It was on sale and I had coupons.
Do you use bleach when washing clothes?
Yes, I use bleach on my whites. I use 1/2 cup in every large load of whites. If you saw my hiking socks you would understand why.
Do you use fabric softener?
Sometimes! Mostly just when I have synthetics that will get static in the winter.
If so, does your washer have the automatic dispenser?
No, I use a downy ball.
Do you use dryer sheets when drying clothes?
Generally not, as I mostly don't use softener AND I line dry most of my clothing through the year.
For stubborn stains, what do you do to get them out?
It depends on the stain. I keep a bar of grandmas old lye soap in the bathroom drawer next to the hamper. When I remove my clothing at night, I check for stains. If there is one it gets moistened on the spot and rubbed with the bar of soap. Sometimes I use Shout.
When shopping for laundry items, what makes you decide to purchase the ones you do?
Usually it is price.
Will sales on detergent, softeners, bleaches, and dryer sheets make you more apt to trying something new?
Absolutely, but I don't go for gimmicks.
Where do you usually purchase your laundry supplies from?
It depends on the sales. I have a formula, a load must cost less than 10 cents per load after sales price and/or coupons.
What type of laundry machines do you have (Top load, front load, HE, etc.)?
Unfortunately, right now a bottom of the line top loader. I hope to one day have a very fancy front loader.
Describe your laundry routine.
It is pretty simple. I put a hamper in each of the bathrooms. When the hamper in the main bathroom starts to fill I know I can grab it and gather laundry from the other hampers to fill it up completely. I go into the basement with this and sort laundry according to color, dirt level, fabric, etc. If I have a full load of something then I do it. I fold and put away as soon as laundry is done so there is no laundry sitting around taking up space on the tops of dressers or sitting around in baskets.
What are any tips/tricks you have for others to make their laundry routine have more success with stains, more ease to it, and just more enjoyable?
Keep something to pre-treat your laundry in the area you change your clothing. If you can treat the stain as you remove your clothing you won't have to worry about stains. After a while it becomes routine. Wash your clothing as soon as you get a full load so you are not spending entire days trying to catch up. If you have a lot of laundry try making a routine such as towels on Monday, Johnny's clothing on Tuesday, Sarah's clothing on Wed, etc. then you won't have to sort clothing for each person to put away. Either that or you can do what my mom did when I was little. I am the youngest of 8 children. She had a table in the basement by the washer. She sorted clothing straight from the dryer into the appropriate boxes that had our names written on them. Then each child was responsible for folding and putting away our own clothing. All the socks went into a big basket and every once in a while (usually Saturday mornings while watching cartoons) we were given the basket to sort socks and match them up.
What brand of detergent do you use?
All Small & Mighty Free & Clear
What made you decide to use that brand?
You don't have to use as much and there aren't any dyes or anything

Yes, I use snuggle. And yes my washer has the automatic dispenser.
Do you use dryer sheets when drying clothes? If yes, which brand do you use?
No

No
Where do you usually purchase your laundry supplies from?
Walmart
What type of laundry machines do you have (Top load, front load, HE, etc)?
We have stacked machines. Grr.
Describe your laundry routine.
I usually just do a light load, a dark load, and towels. I put the detergent in, start the water, put the clothes in, then the fabric softener in the dispenser. I fill the fabric softener lid with water and put that in after the fabric softener. After the washer is done, I transfer the clothes to the dryer. Then they end up sitting in a laundry basket until I wear them or my hubby-to-be hangs them up. ๐
What are any tips/tricks you have for others to make their laundry routine have more success with stains, more ease to it, and just more enjoyable?
Have more than one laundry basket. That way you can sort the clothes as you put them in them, instead of right before you start the laundry.

For stubborn stains, what do you do to get them out?

When shopping for laundry items, what makes you decide to purchase the ones you do?
I've used most of the same ones for years, so I don't put much thought into it.

Yes, a sale will make me more apt to try something new provided it's fragrance and dye free.

I have a top load washer.
My routine is to wash one load almost every nice day that I'm home. Since I hang clothes outside to dry, I start in the morning.
I enjoy doing laundry more since I've started hanging it outside to dry since it gets me outside in the fresh air and sunshine – it just seems like less work (although it probably isn't).

What are any tips/tricks you have for others to make their laundry routine have more success with stains, more ease to it, and just more enjoyable? I forgot ,if you want your clothes bright add a tesp of pepper to wash.
Arm and Hammer because I like it and it works. I use only color safe bleach to brighten clothes. I use a liquid fabric softener because I have an automatic dispenser.
I use Shout to get out stains.
I like the items I purchase and I feel they are priced reasonably.
Sometimes I will try something that is on sale.
Walmart is where I purchase supplies.
I have a Maytag top loader
I sort the whites, light colors and darks. I fill the washer and add detergent before the clothes. I tidy up the house while the clothes get washed and dried.
My tip is don't overload the washer and dryer. The machines will last longer and your clothes will get cleaner.

Purex.
What made you decide to use that brand?
Price.
Do you use bleach when washing clothes? Why or Why not?
No, I'm lazy.
Do you use fabric softner? If so, does your washer have the automatic dispenser?
Yes, no automatic dispenser (it's the laundry in the basement of my building, the stuff is junk)
Do you use dryer sheets when drying clothes? If yes, which brand do you use?
Yes, whatever's on sale.
For stubborn stains, what do you do to get them out?
Stain-Away.

Where do you usually purchase your laundry supplies from?
Costco.
What type of laundry machines do you have (Top load, front load, HE, etc)?
Front load garbage ones lol
Describe your laundry routine.
I don't have one ๐
What are any tips/tricks you have for others to make their laundry routine have more success with stains, more ease to it, and just more enjoyable?
None, sorry ๐
1. Detergent: Cheer
2. Why? Worked for my mom. Works for me.
3. Bleach? Yes. Chlorox. On linens, washcloths/towels, dirty socks.
4. Fabric Softner? Yes. Except for washclothes & towels because it reduces absorption. Auto-dispense? No.
5. Dryer Sheets? For clothes only. Bounce.
6. Stains? Don't put them off. Add small amount of Chlorox 2. Sit 5 minutes. Rub. Wash.
7. When shopping I sonly purchase the same tried & true brands.
8. Sales, etc. influence trying something else? Never. But I will stock up if my brands are on sale.
9. Purchase at Wal-Mart
10. Top loading washer, front loading electric dryer.
11. Routine? I do laundry when I have a full load or something is needed. Linens every Saturday. Nursing uniforms are kept in a separate hamper and washed at the end of my work week.
12. Tips & Tricks?
You can find suggestions on the inside top of the washer.
Don't let stains dry.
Only buy white sheets, towels/washclothes, and socks (except dress socks, of course.) I know that sounds boring, but these are things you probably want to bleach.
Instead of just throwing clothes in the basket, fold them as you take them out and keep hangers nearby so you can put them on the hanger right away. Really it does save time.
Thanks! Heather

I am currently using the Costco brand of laundry detergent, I think it is a higher grade without the price cause I have to do a ton of laundry.
I don't usually use bleach but I will if I need to and the article allows it, the problem is they usually say 'no bleach'.
I do use fabric softener when I buy it or when I can't dry something, but I don't use the dispenser, I use the downey ball.
I use dryer sheets if I didn't put fabric softener in the wash. I use different brands but I like the costco brand of these also, a super great deal!
For stubborn stains I usually use Oxyclean, that stuff is amazing at getting out almost anything. Or if I can I'll use a bleach stick.
When I'm shopping for laundry items I try to get the best quality for not too much money.
Sales on laundry items might get me to try something new, but only if I think it's good quality.
I usually purchase my laundry supplies from Costco or Target.
I have a top load washer and a front load dryer, both old.
My laundry routine is the typical including rounding up clothing, sorting it, washing and drying it and folding it and putting it away. Nothing too crazy here!
I think a good laundry tip is to always turn shirts with designs inside-out cause it helps to keep them looking newer longer.
