Guest Post: Memo to the Language Assassins

Guest Post by Mrs. M from I’ve Changed my Name to Mommy

Dear Language Assassins,

I know this is the internet and not an English classroom, and I’m really not trying to “harsh your buzz” or whatever it is you say these days, but if it wouldn’t be too much trouble do you think you could learn to write? I have some suggestions that might help you-please look them over and see if you might be able to use any of them.

Firstly, the internet isn’t one of your train-side tags. The internet is a big, wide open space-feel free to write in complete sentences. Maybe even spell out a word or two. This is especially helpful when you are in debate forums. You can’t build a decent argument without effective communication.

-Example-
Good: Your argument is faulty, and clearly my logic is far superior.

Bad: Learn2Logic. Strawman FAIL. U R PW3D.

Which brings me to my next point-please stop making up words. Unless you are a lexicographer that really isn’t your job, and I assure you the English language has been communicating effectively for centuries without your non-sensical and/or purposely misspelled contributions.

funny cat

Please consider eliminating the following “words” from your vocabulary: PW3D, No0b, FAIL, ATWD, FUBAR, and L8R.

Lastly, let’s talk about my personal pet peeve-homonyms. I know that it is easier to type “there” “your” and “accept” regardless of the context, and I appreciate your attempt to actually write something out ‘long hand’ I really do, but it can really get distracting when you’re constantly using the wrong word.

-Example-
Your going to have to watch your language hear-their are no acceptions.

Look, it’s really simple-I understand that you’re not typing online with a dictionary on hand. Typos happen. Misspellings happen. Bad grammar happens. That’s okay, the English language is pretty flexible…but if I need a magic decoder ring to figure out what you are saying that’s not effective communication that’s just a language hatchet job.

In short, you are not an LOL cat, please don’t type like one.

Sincerely,
Concerned English Speaking Person

*Note from Toni: I have no idea what PW3D, No0b, FAIL, ATWD, FUBAR are LOL. And I probably mess up one if not all of their key points, my apologies my friend. I will shall try harder to not not to mess up. Their There I made an oath fer for you. *giggle*

Thanks for having me as a guest poster! Sucks that you forgot my name/link though. I'll file that under "occasional typo" not "language assassination" LoL. I hope you're having a good vacation!

    Seriously-magic decoder ring-classic ๐Ÿ™‚ Great post!

  3. 3

Brilliant post! I would very much like to know the definitions of the following; PW3D, No0b, FAIL, ATWD. Thanks!

Urban Dictionary is my BEST FRIEND due to this language butchering phenomenon. I just type in what they are saying and BOOM! Translated…

But I agree. Keep the English language clean, people!

As a person with an English education major, this cracked me up. Hilarious! And, I completely agree.

I absolutely agree. I see nothing wrong with taking poetic license occasionally. When everything is always a mess how are we supposed to recognize it?

Of course, this brings out all the "I'm not paid to write on the internet so I right like I wants to becuz itz ez-er. Frankly, I can't imagine how it is easier to come up with alternate spellings for everything. It would take me much longer to do. I just can not swallow that line.

    PW3D, No0b, FAIL, ATWD, FUBAR

PW3D Aka: Powned, poowned, P$wned… etc. : Means: You were beat, owned, creamed… Example: I was playing Halo 3 the other day and totally pw3d this N00B who was trying to steal my kill

No0b Aka: N00B, n00b, etc: Means: Newbie, new person, green .. Example: I am a total n00b when it comes to blogging.

FUBR: F*C&ed Up Beyond Recognition: Means: Well… it means what it says… like a typical day.

w00t: WOOT!: Means: YAY, Hurray, etc. Example: WOOT! I won a Wii!!

These are gamer terms typically EQ, WOW, LOTR, DAOC, or console gamers will use these terms.

And yes…. I worry about my kids language deficits from all this ๐Ÿ™‚

    I don't know what PW3D, No0b, FAIL, ATWD, FUBAR mean. I guess that's good!

I have seen some pretty annoying words or terms on blogs lately. Such as lurve (love), gorg (gorgeous), easy peasy and hardy har har.

My personal favorite (most annoying) was something like: I double glitter, puffy heart lurve it.

Oh how I love, love, LOVE this post! My kids call me, "Gramma' Queen" because I'm always correcting their speech.

I'm hopping in from the Blog Frog Community Leader's group to join your community and post a comment there. However, I cannot find your community widget for the life of me. It's probably staring me right in the face, but my eyes are deceiving me. lol

Can you point me in the right direction, so I can join?

I've been following you and have had your button for quite some time, but now I'm also following on twitter (naturesencore).

I'm looking forward to knowing you more.
