This year, the state of Florida passed a law that are meant to keep you and your family safe. In Florida, 114 residential fire deaths were reported by U.S. news media between Jan. 1 and Dec. 1, 2014. Of those incidents, 43 percent of the homes did not have alarms or working smoke alarms. So, as of January 1, 2015, Florida homeowners must replace outdated or non-working battery powered smoke alarms with 10-year, sealed battery smoke alarms. (reference: Fire Safety Laws by State)
A few tips on Home Fire Safety:
• Do you have an escape plan? Sit down with your family and discuss what you would do in the event of a fire. Have a plan in place so there is less risk of panic! Practice them. Kids are going to get scared, so being prepared can help ease their worries, at least a little.
• If you have more than one level in your home, you should have a fire extinguisher on each level. Keep them in your kitchen and close to exits.
• Smoke Alarms should be replaced every 10 years. If you have an old one that doesn’t have a 10 year sealed battery go ahead and replace now with Kidde Worry-Free alarm. Don’t forget to test them monthly to make sure they are on the up and up.
• Carbon Monoxide Alarms are needed! Put them close to bedroom in addition to one on each floor in your home. Be sure to test these monthly as well!
• Teach kids the important habits like unplugging devices, turning off kitchen appliances used to cook, and not leaving a space heater on when they are not going to be in the room
