Giving back is so important not just during the holidays but all year long. Thanks to the Boys & Girls Club of America we can all do just that.
During the holidays it can be so easy to focus on heading out and getting the great deals and I have watched when family takes second place to a good deal. That’s something that is never okay for me to see. If we take a moment to stop thinking about the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season and remember what it is really about I believe the world would be a much better place. All year long I teach my kids the importance of giving and really try to reiterate that during the holiday season.
I have to say we have always loved the BGCA. What they do to help so many kids is just something that is so dear to my heart. We, in the past, have loved joining in activities alongside them and now that my kids are getting older I hope to help them get involved in giving back.
Following quite a few of the tips shared by they Boys & Girls Clubs of America I love being able to remind my kids the importance of giving:
- Volunteer Together. When your child works alongside you and see you lending a hand, I fully believe it instills something in them.
- Read Books About Giving. We add, fairly often, books about giving and helping others, I know that my kids think back to these books and hope it makes them want to help a little more.
- Get Creative. Let your child color a photo to give to to someone, or let them help you bake some cookies to present someone this holiday season.
- Celebrate All Kinds Of Giving. When we think of giving and helping others it’s easy to think of volunteering at a shelter but be sure to celebrate the everyday things too, like when they gave their sibling the last candy. Celebrating the daily giving and praising them for doing good, I believe, will help them want to do more.
- Incentives Are Okay. I don’t like to think of it as bribing my kids to do a good thing. When they take the time to do something good for others I, occasionally, want to reward them and I fully believe that’s okay.
This year marks the 2nd Annual Give the Gift of a Great Future Holiday Campaign. BGCA has created the Give the Gift of a Great Future website with a focus on creative and easy activities to teach the value of giving back. No age proves too young for children to start learning the importance of giving back, especially during the holiday season.

Giving back is something more of us need to do, and teaching my kids is a way to ensure it continues on in my family for generations to come!
