Dyson DC28 Animal Review

I recently had the chance to review a Dyson DC28 Animal.  When I say I was excited to do this review, it doesn’t really even cover it.  I actually NEEDED to do this review.  Why you ask?  Right before Christmas a vacuum I received a little over a year ago just quit working.  With 3 kids (and pet sitting at the moment for my mother in law), you can’t NOT vacuum.  Do you even know the messes 3 kids alone make on a daily basis?  In winter they come stomping in with tons of leaves so one trip out of the house and back in and it needs a vacuuming.

The Fed-Ex woman arrives as I was leaving my house and I was ecstatic to see what she was bringing up to my porch.  After I got my precious cargo tucked safely away in my home I ran and did my errand as fast as I could because I wanted to get back and vacuum!   I was a bit worried about assembly, if it is more than a few instructions or requires any screws/bolts I am not your person and I did not want to have to wait all day for hubs to get home and assemble.

I returned home and opened the box and peered inside at the contents and instruction book.  To assemble the Dyson DC 28 Animal all you had to do was click the hose and wand together and then click it onto the already assembled vacuum.  So easy even yours truly got it done in a matter of a few minutes.  And the only reason it took me that long is because I had to get all the plastic off everything.  Okay and maybe I admired the pretty purple for a second or two.

After getting it put together I dug through the attachments which include:

  • Stair tool (self explanatory)
  • Combination accessory tool (this is what I call the crevice tool, but it also converts to a brush tool for dusting)
  • Mini turbine head (removes pet hair and dirt from confined spaces such as car, bed, furniture and attaches to wand or hose)
  • Flat Outâ„¢ head (perfect for getting under low areas where the vacuum itself can’t go, under furniture, beds, etc)

What makes the Dyson DC28 Animal different from other “animal” vacuums. 2 things in my opinion.  The root cyclone technology, their patented technology so you don’t lose suction as you vacuum.  That’s a big thing, no one wants a vacuum that quits cleaning. Though while I am on this point let me tell you about what happened with me.  While I was cleaning up the billions of leaves, I noticed *gasp* it all the sudden quit sucking up things.  Now knowing good and well this is not what should happen with a Dyson, I went to searching for the problem.

As mentioned I got a little leaf happy and while it does great at sucking a lot of them up at a time it’s a bit harder for it to seperate them fast enough to get through the rest of the “tunnel”.  So this was my chance to see how easy it would be to unclear a clog, with other vacuums I have used if it got clogged it was a big fiasco of taking it apart and finding the clog and I did not like that at all.  So I laid the Dyson down and unhooked the tubing from brusher area and there was the clog, I pulled it right out and voila, it was in perfect condition.  So instead, I took out the wand the next time I had piles of leaves to suck up.

The next thing that really distinguishes the Dyson from other vacuums in the Air Muscle Technology. What is Air Muscle Technology you ask? It’s three Dyson-engineered components – a pneumatic actuator, a powered cam and a high-torque clutch – that combine for the most thorough clean, without losing suction.  Not to mention Air Muscle just makes you think “Strong Cleaning” or at least it does me and nothing else would describe a Dyson better.

With fingertip controls the Dyson DC28 Animal makes switching from bare floor to high carpet as easy as the push of a finger.  It comes with Medium carpet as the default so every time you start to vacuum that is the setting that will light up but to change just click the level you need and it changes for you.  So no bending over to adjust the vacuum to the level you need and it automatically stops the brush when you click the bare floor.

Some other specifications of the Dyson DC28 Animal (taken from site):

  • Suction Power: 245 Air Watts. * I don’t do vacuum verbiage but I am willing to bet that is pretty good.  It’s Dyson right!*
  • Movement Type: Fixed Wheel, this is not one of the ball Dyson’s. *However it is still very easy to turn and control*
  • Filtration:  Lifetime Washable Hepa Filter for the cleanest expelled air.  *Make sure to wash this every 3 months at the very least.*
  • Motorized Brushbar is used to clean all floors. *It has picked up every little speck of glitter in my house*
  • Quick-draw Telescope Reachâ„¢ wand for stairs and hard to reach spaces.  *This has been great for getting the cobwebs out of the corners*
  • Bin capacity is 0.61 gallons.  *The first time I vacuumed I filled this up pretty quick but then again I hadn’t vacuumed in 2 weeks since my old one broke.  However I have vacuumed several times since then and only had to empty it once, so it holds a lot.*
  • Dimensions of the Dyson DC28 Animal are 42.1 x 13.5 x 14.3 inches (H x W x D). *It’s not too big for someone small like myself and not too small for my husband, I see vacuuming in his future woo hoo*
  • The max reach is 52.5 feet with a cord length of 35.2 feet. *This allowed me to make it through my whole house from the central plug*
  • Weight is 20.61 pounds.  *It is a bit on the heavy side but with the self propelled feature it feels like nothing, you don’t have to put very much force behind vacuuming at all*

With most of the vacuum’s I have owned in the past they were bagged and the cost of replacing bags when you have 3 kids who make A LOT of messes can add up.  I love that the Dyson DC28 Animal has a canister that I can empty with the touch of a finger and it snaps right back on just as easy.  Now let me insert here I have not been a fan of many canister vacuums in the past because when you took them and turned them upside down to empty them it made a lovely dust air-filled mess.  With the Dyson no upside down turning is required and when the bottom of the canister opened it did not cause a dust air filled mess, it put the dust, dirt and debris into the trash with little going up into the air.  So two thumbs way way up for that.

All in all, the Dyson DC28 Animal is a great vacuum that I would suggest to anyone who is looking for power to clean up the messiest of messes with ease of use.  You can purchase one for yourself through Dyson or other retailers such as Wal-Mart, where you can get site to store free shipping and pick up at your local store.  The Dyson DC28 Animal is definitely Daily Dose Approved!

After reading your review I so want to buy the new Dyson Animal. I have had my Dyson Animal for 6yrs now and while it has never let me down I am longing for the newer features. Maybe I will start saving my money for a new one, should take me at least 6mths to a year but since I got my money’s worth out of the first one its worth the wait.

You are sooooo lucky! My vacuum broke just the other day. I wasn’t too surprised, since it was about eight years old. We really used it a lot! With 3 young kids, who leave crumbs all over the house and three cats (I know, what was I thinking)I have to vacuum all the time. The cat hair is so difficult to get out of the edges of the carpet. I really want the Dyson but I can’t afford it right now.

    Enjoy the Rolls-Royce of vacuums!

Thanks for reviewing this. I’ve got three kids, two cats, and two dogs and was wondering if this vacuum would do the job. Now I know it’s definitely a vacuum that we should consider.

So great that you’re enjoying your Dyson! I love my Blueprint, probably more than ANY home gadget in my house! 🙂

I really need a handheld for the little jobs though and so the kids can help more. I don’t let them touch my vacuum and it’s hard because toddler boys says, “Mom! PLEASE… Santa brought me one that doesn’t work!” lol

My Eureka vacuum is falling apart so I’m in the market for a new one. I’ve heard about Dyson and seen their TV commercials; your hands-on review really impresses me. Now I want one–bad! And purple!! Even better!

Good for you locating the clog and not giving up! Nice review, thanx for sharing your experience w/us.

I like the fact that with just a push of a button your off to the bare floors as my house is a mixture of carped and bare floors. Thanks for a great review.

I am so inspired, Toni, after reading your review of the Dyson DC28 Animal review!!! I dogsit two black labs (one longhair & one shorthair). I love dogs and it so happens that the owners of these dogs for whom I dogsit have two children. One child will be one-year old in May and the other child will be four in August.
The dogs are not allowed inside the home because the youngest is crawling and doghairs are found throughout the area where she crawls. However, when I dogsit it is with the understanding the two labs are allowed inside the home with me.
I am so excited because now I can gift them A Dyson DC28 vacuum.
This would allow the dogs inside where they will be able to re-join the family and the social activities. If I gift it to them, the family will love it’s lightweight, it’s suctioning capabilities and it’s portability. It does a dynamite job of vacuuming because it has all the Dyson power and easily vacuums doghair along with other debris. I am hopeful that the dogs will be allowed back inside to socialize with the rest of their family.
As for me, I’m almost 69 years old. The Dyson will be easy enough for me to operate and to empty and it will be light enough where I can easily maneuver it. And it’s price will be manageable because it offers such great features, I can justify it’s cost.
The dogs will love it too because they will reap just as many benefits as the dogowners and the dogsitter. Thanks for hope and thank Dyson for offering such a great vacuum cleaner whose power is legendary.

The DC28 is a beast. I think I prefer the DC22 or 23, they are much lighter. However, I can’t argue that the Dyson DC28 isn’t a great vacuum though.
