Breast Augmentation Journey (Part 1): Consult Through Surgery Day

Breast augmentation is something I have wanted to do for quite some time now. If I’m being honest, it has been since I was in my twenties, but I made the decision that I wanted to be done having kids (and nursing them) before I had the surgery. Fast forward through having 3 children, nursing all three of them…I thought I would get it as soon as I go done nursing my last, but life gets busy and I just never took the plunge. So, now, 15 years after closing up the milk shop I FINALLY decided now was the time!

So, as one would (or should) when considering a completely optional surgery I did my research (in fact I had been researching for years) and narrowed it down to three local doctors. After picking the three locally, I read review after review after review and narrowed it down to two different places. Then it was time to look at the boobies. After looking at lots of boobie pics, and I mean LOTS … I felt weird having so many photos of women’s breasts on my phone…I just knew Shaddix Plastic Surgery was who I wanted to go with. I set the date for my consult and could not have been more excited. Here is what I was starting with.

Now, if you have seen my photos on insta (or seen me in real life) you may have thought I already had an augmentation…I would like to thank Victoria Secret for making THE BEST push-up bras and swimsuit tops that made my deflated gals look like they had a little life still in them! I had boobs, just not any volume at the top (in huge part thanks to the milk holders they became while I was pregnant and subsequently the babies who lived off those things). Next tsop consultation…

So, when I went to my consultation with Dr. Shaddix I actually asked if a lift is what I would need to get what I wanted (top volume aka upper pole and cleavage).  After he looked at my breasts and took my measurements, I was told while I did have a tiny bit more skin over the crease, than what would be considered perfectly ideal,  he believed just an augmentation would meet my goal (and I would avoid the extra scar and cost). Now, let me be perfectly clear…this doesn’t mean I won’t need a lift down the road, but hopefully not for quite some time. We discussed sizes, type, etc and now it was time to try on the sizers…

These are the two sizes I went back and forth on, that day. The 350cc and 450cc implant sizes. I actually ended up going back 2 more times to try them on with different clothing before finally settling on the 450cc. Here is what the 450cc sizers looked like:

I thought they were a good size without looking too big on my frame. Now that the size was out of the way, the next thing was what type of implant did I want, silicone or saline?  At first, I was really leaning toward saline, but after reading so many reviews and talking to friends and family who have had breast augmentation, I decided silicone was going to be best for my goals. After getting everything picked, I set my surgery date and Dr. Shaddix called in my meds so I could have them on hand the day of surgery. What my plastic surgeon prescribed was a nausea patch (they put on the morning of my surgery) to combat any nausea the anesthesia might cause, nausea pills, pain pills, muscle relaxers and an antibiotic. The countdown to surgery was on!

Now in between this and my surgery date, I admit I had some freakouts. I had seen some people that 350cc looked HUGE on and some that had 550cc that looked not too bad. So, now I am freaking out that I picked the wrong size…let me tell you the emotional roller coaster worrying that you didn’t pick the right size is no joke. Ultimately I had to trust that my surgeon knew what my goal was, looked at my wish pics and would make me look just right. My advice…once you pick a size DO NOT look at what it looks like on everyone else. No one has your body, so how it looks on them may not be how it looks on you. Don’t be afraid to try the sizers on again and again and again. That’s what any good plastic surgeon (and their team) will want you to do…be sure!

As I geared up for my surgery I had the unfortunate luck of getting a sinus and ear infection thanks to the drainage I had from our lovely amounts of pollen…thankfully, it was far enough out from my surgery I was able to get an antibiotic and steroid and pushed that infection right on out almost as fast as it came on! Finally surgery day (May 3, 2023) was here. My hubby was my designated person that day, so with a bright and early showtime of 6:15 a.m. we arrived at the surgery center (which is actually also Dr. Shaddix’s medical office and also has a spa). I dressed in a zip-up jacket and pajama pants, I was making sure I was going to have the comfiest clothes when I left and with it being so early I didn’t feel the need to get out of my PJs.

I loved the waiting room on the surgical center side (of course the main office part is just as fancy, so no complaints there…all the fanciness was making me wish I had went into plastic surgery as a career). Check out the fancy waiting area..

Now, while I couldn’t eat or drink after midnight but they had coffee, sodas, water, etc for the surgery support peeps. So, while you are waiting you can enjoy a beverage (just bring some snacks and a computer and you’re set). We waited about 10 minutes and they called us back to the pre-op room. After a quick stop in the bathroom to leave a urine sample and change into my super cute outfit…

we got all settled into my pre-op room. A nurse came in and put my nausea patch on, got an IV started to give me fluids and she was just the sweetest. She was followed by the anesthesiologist, who went over all the anesthesia stuff with me and started an antibiotic through my IV. Last, in the pre-op room, the doc came in to mark me up and go over the final details (and have me sign waivers and all that legal stuff they have to do) then it was almost go time! I walked over to the surgical room, got up on a table, they gave me a little bit of that good stuff in my IV and then I drifted off. The surgery took about 1.5 hours, per the hubby, and the next thing I knew I woke up with new boobs! I was in and out of it for all the rest of that day. My after-care nurse gave me a pain pill and muscle relaxer once I was more awake, so that they would kick in by the time I got home. Rest is key in healing!

Now that were were back home…it was time to rest and heal! This is where this part of my story will end, but not to worry I will be posting again, soon, sharing my recovery, my breast augmentation progress pics and sharing things I never realized would be part of a breast augmentation journey/recovery. It’s been quite the adventure and it’s only been 2 weeks since my surgery (as of the writing of this post)

Have you considered having a breast augmentation? Let me know in the comments! And feel free to ask any questions, I will share my answer (pending I can answer your question) based on my own personal experience!
