Aloha Friday 5/15

It’s Friday so that means it’s time to take it easy on posting. KaiLani from An Island Life started this great weekly ritual and I love joining in.

This week my question is based on the radio show I will be cohosting with Sugar Jones. Chicks Who Chat, at 11 a.m. Central time zone today she and I will be talking about the vaccine debate and Chicken pox parties. So please head over and join in the conversation in the chat room or call into the show to voice your opinion. Now for my question:

What is your stance on vaccines? Yay or Nay.

No need to discuss further if you don’t want to, but if you would like to please feel free to elaborate on why you feel the way you do. Or maybe you are okay with some and not others?

If you want to know my stance then head over to Chicks Who Chat at 11 a.m. Central to listen to the Great Vaccine Debate and hear yours truly’s thoughts on them.

    I am for vaccinations.

  2. 2

YaY, I’m for them, I think if they were bad they are cleaned up now

  3. 3

I would say yes to some and no to some. I don’t think kids need a Chicken pox shot. I think we are over vaccinating our kids. Everytime you turn around there is another shot for something else. I think it is ridiculous. I think the shots have something to do with the reason the autism rates have gone up in America. They need to go back to the old shot schedule. There is just to many vaccines given today. Ok let me stop!

Ooh, I wish I could catch your radio show since this is going to be an interesting topic to discuss. I’m a yay all the way.

I say as a baby yes, some of these new ones though, I’m not so comfortable with.

  6. 6

I am absolutely for vaccines. My son had compromised airways @ birth & it was always frightening to me to think that he could get sick & die because someone didn't think it was necessary to vaccinate.

Not as big a proponent of chicken pox parties though. People do die from some of the diseases that were once upon a time wiped out!

This is such a hard question and I constantly go back and forth on it. I would like to see vaccinations given on a different schedule and not administered in a cocktail. It is a scary decision that parents have to make and we really don’t know what the right decision is. We have a few friends that have autistic children, seeing their struggles and dedication to helping their children is both aspiring and scary. My oldest daughter seems not to have been affected by vaccinations, but now we are going through it all over again with our youngest.

Wow this is the question of the decade isn’t it? 🙂 Well, I have very strong feelings on both sides.. I have read a million things.. and yet..I just as a parent didn’t feel comfortable or at peace in not vaccinating my children. However, many people I know and even family members do not vaccinate. I think whatever a parent decides for their children is their right. It does scare me however, and I just ask the Lord to protect my children and give me the wisdom to raise and protect them.

  9. 9

I vaccinate but respect the right of parents to choose either way.

  10. 10

I am ok with them if my wife is and if she is not either am I. Not sure this answers the question.

We’ve done them for all three kids. It is required by the military who covers our insurance. Thankfully we have had no problems. I would probably do them anyway because I think the illnesses are potentially more dangerous than the vaccines.

I’m all for vaccinations! Have a great weekend!

  16. 16

Great question Toni!! I am for vaccines. I work in a doctors office and though it is optical… I still am familiar with the medical community. I also have a child with ADHD and try to stay current on the whole debate as to the risks of vaccinating BUT ultimatly it is the parents decision.

  17. 17

I am for them, but I can understand why some people would not be.

  18. 18

When I had my second son, I was part of an email group. We had LOTS of fun and discussed everything. Some women left some new ones would show and so on. One day I got an email from a Friend in Texas, she got a brand new puppy! she was so excited, she went and took her puppy to the vet to get his booster shots! The puppy came home, went out to the yard, and she heard a noise. The dog died of a complication of either too many shots or a reaction to shots. I decided right then and there not to give my kids more then 2shots per visit. I do not want my kids to be sick but I also want to be informed. When the Chicken Pox vaccine came out it was designed for children with Leukemia and going through chemo therapy because their immune systems would be so crappy form the chemo, they wanted them protected from one more thing that might send them over the edge. (now of course this is stuff I’ve readover the last 10yrs of having kids, I’m sure ther are more stories out there)
When I took AJ in for his 1yr shots, they did them, he came home had a reaction, I kept watch on him, 6months later I’m sent a letter, the drs office didn’t ahve the shots kept at the right temperature! they were recalled,aND theyw ere offering to redo his shots?? I said no, I opted for the idea that he had some immunity in him given he had a reaction to the shots. So far he hasn’t gotten any of the diseases that were in that shot. The older two had the chicken pox 2wks before I delivered MJ, and I went to the hospitalthe night I had MJ so I could hang out in their rooms without having AJ climbing into bed and poking my back. I wont be getting MJ the CP shot cause maybe he’s already had it? milkspots? or chicken pox? not sure, not going to get the shot. wow that got long…. but maybe too many shots are a bad thing.

Oh anotehr story?when TJ was born there was a recall on the HepB (I think that’s the one) because of the mercury in it, we delayed it for 2months and I decided to delay it for 2months for the others too.

  20. 20

The polio and older ones are tried and true musts. I’m not as keen on some of the newer ones.

  21. 21

I am a believer in vaccines, if you can prevent something…wouldn’t you want to?

  22. 22

All four of my children received all their required vaccines (and one or two that were optional). While I did feel somewhat apprehensive about them, in the end, I think the benefits outweighed the risks. One vaccine that I do feel particularly happy about, is the Gardasil vaccine for girls. My daughter, who is almost 13, received the series last year and I feel really good about that.

    Happy weekend!

  23. 23

Both of my girls were vaccinated. The chicken pox vaccine was very new when my younger daughter had the opportunity to have it. I opted out. She did have the chicken pox. I just wasn’t willing to give her such a new vaccine.

  24. 24

I say Yah look at all the illnesses that are no longer because of them

  25. 25

I’m ok with vaccinations, but we don’t follow the AAP schedule. I don’t like that they give so many at once, so we follow a different vaccination schedule.

  26. 26

I’m for vaccinations. They prevent the greater public from contracting diseases.

  27. 27

I think it is very important to have your children vaccinated. Some of the elective vaccinations (for older people) I think is up to them!

  28. 28

We don’t vaccinate our daughter at all.

I believe in vaccinations, but only after they have been around for a while. My mom hemmed and hawed about giving my sister the chicken pox vaccine when she was little (it had just come out). She decided against it because it was so new. Now 10 years later, everyone is having to get booster shots which they didn’t even used to know about.

    Pamela Kramer

I’ve never had a problem with vaccines until my son came along who is allergic to eggs, peanuts and penicillin. I just took him for a shot (he’s almost 3) and he threw up 30 minutes later. The next day he threw up twice. I talked to the doctor but he thinks it’s a stomach virus. I don’t know what to think.

  32. 32

I’ll say yay – can I add for most of them? :o)

  33. 33

I would have loved to been in on this conversation! I’ve got a lot to say about vaccinations.

I used to be one of those moms who was all the way FOR vaccinations. I thought there was no excuse.

Enter Miss Pea. At two months, the dear weighed just over 6 lbs. She had 7 differnt things injected into her body. I was a bit overwhelemed, but I dealt with it. Then, at 4 months we went back for the second set. Toni, I can not tell you how sick my little baby was. For 3 days she had a fever of 102 degrees was lethargic, cried if she held, cried if she was put down. It was too the point that they wanted to admit her to the hospital. At the time, we didn’t realize it was the shots. Didn’t even cross my mind. The 6 months time comes and once again, I gave took her in for her vaccinations. She got sick again.

And I knew. I knew there was something that wasn’t working with her little body…something in those vaccinations. It was a wake up call for me. My Paige is the last child I’ll have. Another pregnancy could kill me. I’d love to fill my house with many, but I must be happy for the 2 that I have.

What if I had really screwed her up? Of course, it wouldn’t have made a difference to me, my love for her will never end, but knowing that I was the one to decide that she should have those vaccinations. It scares me to death. Because of my decisions, I could have damaged my child. My child, who I waited 7 long years for.

So, sorry to ramble, but we have choosen delayed vaccinations. Someday (when she weighs 35 lbs), we will start the vaccinations again, one every 2 months to see how she reacts. I’m okay with this, her doctor is okay with this. I can wait forever for that someday.

  34. 34

I’m for vaccinations (maybe not as many and as quickly as they are given) however I’m really writing because I got a laugh out of Rob’s comment:
“I am ok with them if my wife is and if she is not either am I. Not sure this answers the question.”

Not sure it does either but it sure is funny. 🙂
