Moving from Florida to New Mexico, and not having the ocean right down the street is hard not easy to adjust to. A friend told us about Sumner Lake which is only 61 miles away from Clovis, New Mexico and worth the drive! We decided to hop in the truck this past Saturday and go camping for the night. We loaded up the Dodge Ram and were on our way to find some water!
The drive to Sumner Lake only took us about one hour. The scenery on the ride there was not exactly appealing, but when we arrived at the lake it was beautiful. There are different camping sites, and we did not need to make any reservations for the primitive camping. There are 50 developed campsites and primitive camping along the water. The primitive campsites are first come, first serve so you might have to get there a little early to get a good spot for the more busy weekends and nights. The rates were anywhere from $8.00 to $14.00 a night. Along with camping, Sumner Lake offers fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking and wildlife. Also for all you dog lovers, it is dog-friendly.
After we had set up our Ozark Trail tents (which are quick and easy to set up, durable, and reasonably priced) we enjoyed the water and sun. The water was clear and felt amazing. The lake at Sumner Lake is 6.1 square miles with 62.2 square miles of land surrounding it. If you enjoy fishing, Sumner Lake has bass, crappie, channel catfish, and walleye.
The Sumner Lake sunset was beautiful and at that time we fired up the grill and built us a small bonfire. There is just something about sitting around a fire with a few drinks, some awesome friends and the smell of the food cooking on the grill that makes me happy. It is a trip I would recommend taking. Especially for you beach lovers that are stationed at Cannon AFB. It is a decent size body of water, and the drive isn’t bad. You can even bring your pontoon boat or fishing boat and soak up some rays that way.

It looks pretty! I’ve never been to New Mexico, but I’ve been to Florida. I’m not all that fond of the beaches or water in Florida, except at Palm Beach where the gulf is only a mile off and it is crystal clear and flying fish and starfish.
