It’s no surprise that flu/cold season is upon us. Already, this winter, I have heard of the flu popping up all over. That’s not the only thing going around. There is also strep, my own kids tend to get ear infections from drainage backing up in their ear (side effect of the colds they get). I do everything I can to make sure they stay healthy but sometimes they still get sick. Then of course it flows through the whole family.
Occasionally, we are able to treat the symptoms with over the counter products and move on. Other times it requires a doctors visit and some antibiotics. I am thankful they can be treated and usually end up getting better with the prescribed treatment. What I don’t love about that is more often than not, we have some not so fun side affects from the antibiotics.
Antibiotics are great at what they do; killing bacteria. That’s exactly what we want them to do. The not so good part is that they can’t differentiate between the good and bad bacteria in our body and “treat” both. When our bad bacteria is extinguished, that’s good, it means we are well on the way to being mended. When the good bacteria is extinguished, that’s bad. We need all that good bacteria to keep our immune system and digestive system in check. When the good bacteria goes away, those systems can go a bit awry.
What I do for my family, when they are on any kind of antibiotics, is make sure to add in Probiotics during the course of the treatment. Whether it’s through a pill form or through foods like raw milk or yogurt, I make sure that our bodies stay in line and keep as many good bacteria as we can. Treating a sickness is definitely something I want to make sure to do, but I also want to make sure we aren’t losing things our bodies need during the treatment.
