I am participating in the Clever Girls Collective Fierce Fun campaign “Traveling Blue Wig Project” where we get to highlight our fierceness. The Fierce Fund is donating $20,000 to support a nonprofit initiative that celebrate, encourage, and elevates women and girls. In other words helping them to become fierce!
Today, I want to tell you about one of the most fierce women I know…my mom! I thought about sharing how fierce I am, because I am fierce, mind you. Surviving a car accident, being told I would never do ballet again and proving the doctors wrong, birthing my daughter literally on my doorstep are just a few of the things that make me fierce. I, being the fierce woman I am, did have to take a photo in the wig (and the gramps had to join in on the fun for a minute because he is a fierce dude).
I pull off the blue well, don’t you think. However, after I sat and thought about this post I knew I wanted to showcase one of the most fierce women I know…my mom! Her story is one that shows, even in the most difficult times, you can be a pillar of strength and encouragement for those around you. Here is a photo of my mom and I a few years ago….
My mom is a cancer survivor. I still remember the call in October 2009, the moment she told me she had breast cancer. I think my world stopped for a moment, but because of the strength I heard in her voice and the assurance she gave me, she was going to be fine. That’s the way my mom is, she is always making sure everyone else is full of hope and looking for the positives, not the negatives.
Throughout her treatment, she was ministering to others (she is a Pastor), she was a light in a situation that so many could view as dark and depressing. Her faith and her attitude put her situation in a different light. Sure, it would be easy to give up, but she knew she had a lot more to do on this earth and refused to give up. In turn, her life and the happiness she had through her cancer treatments, gave those around her hope. She made others smile and she gave to others during a time she could have set back and let others give to and help her.
That’s who my moms is, a giver, someone who will put others first even if she is going through the most difficult and scary situation of her life. She’s fierce because she beat cancer with a smile on her face the whole time. She’s fierce because she was a light to others in the same situation she was in. She’s fierce because there is nothing she would not do for another human being, she would give the shirt off her own back. She’s fierce for so many reasons and I am so proud to call her my mom.
Life can throw us some pretty crappy situations sometimes, but in the end how we handle them and how we look at them is what will make all the difference. If my moms walk through cancer taught me anything, it was to not focus on the bad, but have faith and know that the situations I am dealt are what I make of them. I am happy to say she has been cancer free since finishing her treatments, just in case you were wondering!
So, what makes you fierce?
