I am thrilled to announce I am an, U by Kotex Tween Mom Ambassador, for the next 6 months. I have 3 wonderful children, 2 boys and then the little girl who tries her best to run the house. I remember thinking about her growing up. There are a lot of changes a girl has to go through. The hormones, the boys, the drama and everything else that comes with being a girl. Honestly, it scared me a bit.
As she has gotten older I have realized it is now more scary for me to have to deal with the changes my boys will go through and have to talk to them than with my girl. Maybe it’s because I have been there before and experienced what she will go through someday that it makes “the talk” territory not near as scary as I thought it would be.
As she enters into the tween years, her body will start to work in different ways and she will have questions. In fact, she started asking them when she was around 5 because for some reason the bathroom is not a sacred place for mom and she thinks it’s okay to barge in. Eventually she noticed things and started asking questions. While she wasn’t ready at the time to get the whole speech she was curious so I gave her enough detail to answer her question without overloading her cute little brain. I think it’s very important, like Aimee’s Mom, to have the talk with your daughter, listen to Aimee’s story:
So many girls today are starting the changes much earlier than when I was growing up and are not informed. Sure we want to shield our children from growing up too fast, but with girls starting their periods as young as 8 and 9 years old they need to be prepared. The changes our bodies go through are scary enough when we are informed, so I think it’s very important to be open with your child. As a parent it’s not easy, but it’s necessary, to make a point to sit and talk with our children about all the things that will be coming along as they grow up. I am certainly glad my mom did. Like I said, it’s scary enough with knowledge so I want to make sure my daughter has the information she needs to be ready for all these changes life will bring her way as she grows up.
Follow these three steps from Kotex to help prepare for “the talk” with your daughter:
- First period facts: Be ready with the answers to questions your daughter is going to have. Know the facts you need to share with her as she enters into this next phase in her life.
- Prepare for the talk: Find ways to break the ice, pick a day and get yourself ready to talk to the little girl, who is growing up, in your life.
- Get the right product: There are so many products on the market today why not pick one that is geared toward tweens. U by Kotex Tween are smaller than regular pads but with the same protection.
As a parent I don’t want my little girl to grow up, but she will. Since keeping her young and carefree isn’t an option I want to make sure she is prepared for all that will come her way. As a parent it’s my job to keep her informed. I want her to always know that I am open and ready to talk with her about everything she wants. My mother and I had a wonderful relationship when I was growing up and I hope my daughter and I have that same thing.
Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a Brand Ambassador Campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of U by Kotex Tween and received products to facilitate my post and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.
