Lipsticks to Crayons is having a birthday bash! It’s a wonderful blog and always has something fun going on. Not to mention it is how I came across Bambina Ballerina.
Anyway for their birthday bash they want you to share a memorable birthday experience. When I think of a memorable birthday my 13th birthday comes to mind. Now as most can imagine I was so excited at the prospect of finally being a teenager and I knew in the back of my mind my mom would do something that I would never forget. I mean how often does your only child turn 13?
We were in Alabama visiting my father and his side of the family during the time I was going to turn 13. The day of my birthday, July 31, my mom and grandma (her mom) took me and my 2 little cousins ice skating. I glided across the ice and pictured myself as graceful as the gold medalists of the olympics (however when I watched the video at a later date I realized just how big of an imagination I had). We stayed there for a few hours then left to drop my cousins off and get ready for my birthday.
We left and we headed to the restaurant, Flying J, which was a truck stop restaraunt. So for my 13th birthday you have myself, my mom and my grandma going to a truck stop gas station that has a restaurant in it, I was a little less than thrilled. I did however have a super cute new outfit to wear. We enter the restaurant that we went to frequently and head to the back room and right when we enter the back room I hear “Surprise”. There were friends and alot more family members. I was very surprised.
We all ate dinner and then they brought in the cake which had a man laying on his side in speedos with 2 wine glasses (I think this was meant to be a batchlorette party cake LOL) that said “Toni you look very very pretty tonight” This was a long standing joke between my mother and I. Then they got ready to sing happy birthday when all of the sudden an annoucement wishing me a happy birtday goes over the intercom and then the truckers in the restaurant sing me happy birthday!
After cake it was time for presents, I got the usual money, clothes, some dolls (yes I still loved barbies at 13). The one that I remember the most was a porcelain doll to add to my collection of others. It was a porcelain nun and it was absolutely beautiful. It came from my italian grandma and I still love it.
All in all it has to be one of the more memorable birthdays I have ever had, I mean how many people go to a truck stop and get truck drivers to sing to them on their birthday, I would be inclined to say not very many.

enjoy your long weekend!!
my memorable birthday experience was my 16th bd; I have a twin(bro)and he had his driver’s license so Mom had asked him to pick up a long stemmed red rose for me. I had never had one before and it was special coming from the family. Remember, this is way back in time—middle 60’s. It was a very nice surprise and Mom had made a special meal also.
Happy 1st bd. to Lipstick to Crayons.
