Frankenweenie Coming October 5, Definitely True Tim Burton Style

During my trip to California for the Brave/Cars Land Event, I had a chance to preview clips from Tim Burton’s and Disneys upcoming Frankenweenie.  I have to say from the moment it started this movie screamed Tim Burton.  If you’ve seen any Tim Burton movies you know the style, a bit dark but always intriguing and entertaining.  Frankenweenie is just that.  Definitely brings in the weird factor, but in a way that actually draws you in and doesn’t turn you off.  I don’t usually do weird, but the clips I saw from Frankenweenie definitely have me ready to see the whole film.  Here is a bit about the movie:

From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous. In Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie” young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences. A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” was filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which elevates the classic style to a whole new experience.

Frankenweenie, come from some of the life experiences Tim Burton  went through.  Obviously not all of the movie but parts of it are themed (according to an interview with producer, Allison Abbate) from parts of his life growing up.  The characters in the movie are creepy and lovable at the same time, see…..

I have to say I giggled at some of the personalities of the characters.  The story is such an endearing one of a boy who loses a best friend and tries to figure out a way to bring him back.  Will it unleash a wave of trouble if he succeeds or will he get to go back to regular life with his best friend by his side?  You’ll have to see the movie to find out.  It hits theaters, October 5, but here is a trailer to give you a little sneak peek at what’s coming…

A few fun facts:

  • When Tim Burton originally conceived the idea for “Frankenweenie,” he envisioned it as a full-length, stop-motion animated film. Due to budget constraints, he instead directed it as a live-action short, released in 1984.  Obviously today (or October 5 rather) he is going to fulfill the dream of releasing it as a full-length film.
  • Over 200 puppets and sets were created for the film.
  • The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (“Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands”), Catherine O’Hara (“Beetlejuice,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas”), Martin Short (“Mars Attacks!”) and Martin Landau (“Ed Wood,” Sleepy Hollow”).  As well as many other talented actors and actresses that bring the characters to life.
  • Several of the character names—Victor, Elsa Van Helsing, Edgar “E” Gore and Mr. Burgemeister— were inspired by classic horror films.
  • Don’t forget to head to theaters October 5, 2012 to see Frankenweenie.  Be sure to check your local theaters for showtimes.
