Being Prepared For The Emotions…And Other Things #KotexMom

The smile is one that can be seen more often than not on my little girl. She has her ups and downs now but it’s usually because she isn’t getting her way. In a few years, her ups and downs, will be because of other reasons. One being the hormonal ups and downs that come with having a period. Thanks to Kotex, and their Hello Period website, I am on the right road to helping my daughter prepare for that important time in her life.

As if emotions aren’t already hard enough to deal with, being caught off guard one month and having an “accident” could prove a little too much for young girls who are dealing with this new phase in life. My daughter hasn’t started her period yet, and I am hoping she is a late bloomer like me, but when she starts asking questions I want her to be prepared. I want to make sure she knows being overly emotional may be a part of what happens each month as that time is approaching.

I want her to do her best to track when her period will start so there is less of a chance that she will have an accident. I know for me, when I was growing up, not being prepared to start my period is something that would set me off into tears like Niagra falls. I want to make sure my daughter avoids adding any extra stress on top of her already sensitive emotions.

Here are a few tips I hope will help her:

  • Keep a few U by Kotex Tween products in your backpack or locker at school.
  • Keep a calendar and track your period each month so you have an idea of when you may start.  **Though this isn’t full proof because anything from being very active to stress can through your cycle off**
  • If you have an accident try to stay calm.  More often than not, you are the only one who will know when this happens.
  • Watch for warning signs: moodiness, cramping, headaches, tender breasts…those are all the signs I have before I start and they could be the same or similar for my daughter.

In such an exciting and scary time in a young girls life, and I want to do my best to prepare her.  I want her to know accidents happen to everyone, being emotional is normal, and that no matter what she can come to me with any questions, thoughts, fears, or whatever she may need to talk about.  If I can make that time in her life a little easier so she transitions smoothly I may very well pat myself on the back.

What are some tips you have for preparing your daughter for the emotions or accidents that may come with starting her period?

She is Adorable Toni!!!! I think it’s great that you are finding ways to prepare her for the HUGE moment in her life. It’s a scary situation for girls to have to go through and I think it’s so important that they know they can talk to their mama’s about it. 🙂

I’ve made a point to be extremely open with my daughter and gradually introduce her to all the issues and concerns she may experience. That’s something my mom did NOT do for me and it made the whole process of growing up extremely traumatizing. I don’t want my daughters to fear and hate something that is normal.

Tracking it on a calendar is a really good idea. Even if it doesn’t come out perfectly timed, it still gives you a heads up which is so important. Good advice here, T!

That’s such an important issue to deal with. I can remember Mom preparing my for physical changes, but not so much the emotional ones (until I was in the middle of them LOL). I remember wondering what was wrong with me that I would cry at the drop of a hat.

Great tips my little sister is 13 and recently started her cycle and since our mother isn’t a part of her life I’ve been her mother figure and have tried the best I can to help her father with all the new things the “teen” years bring
