Being Prepared For Back To School #KotexMom

Back to school is such a big time for all kids.  They get excited about the changes a new school year can bring.  There is anticipation about which teacher they will have and who will be in their class.  Being prepared for back to school is important for both parent and kids alike.   Getting school supplies is one way to be prepared but there is a little something extra my daughter will need to prepare for when it comes to back to school time….her period.

As much as I would like to keep her a little girl forever, I can’t.  As her mom, it’s important that I prepare her for this as she grows closer to the age it will happen.  It’s easy to prepare for the normal back to school things but this is a little more personal and sometimes more difficult to prepare for.  If she is lucky she will get her period for the first time while at home with me, but with so much of their year spent at the school chances are high that it could happen when she is not with me.  I want to make sure she is very prepared if that is the case.

Here are some tips I am hoping will prepare my daughter if she has the big moment happen at school:

• Teach her signs that her period might be coming so she isn’t caught off guard.  The cramps, headaches, spotting are all things I will be making sure my daughter knows to look for just in case she is having symptoms when I am not around.  If she isn’t caught off guard she can be a bit more confident and able to handle getting her first period even if mom isn’t around.
• Make her a care pack.  A small package in a discreet bag with the supplies she might need should her first period come while at school.  Items good to put in the pack could include: Ibuprofen (or midol),  U by Kotex Tween pads and panty liners, and a piece (or two) of Dove chocolate of course.
• A small calendar at home.  Once her first period starts a little calendar is a great way to keep track of her cycle so she can do her best to be prepared each month.
• Keep a small jacket in her locker/bag.  We can prepare as much as we would like, but chances are at some point her period will come when she is not expecting it.  If she has this happen I want her to be able to cover up until I can get her picked up or new clothes.

First periods are such a big thing for tween/teen girls and it’s something that I want to make sure my daughter is prepared for.  In a perfect world, it would be during the summer or on a weekend at home with me so I can talk her through the first time, but if it’s not I want to do my best to make sure she is prepared and not scared.  With these tips and the Hello Period website I feel we are well on the way to making sure our bases are covered.  Now if I can just remind myself she is growing up and won’t stop, maybe I will be just as prepared as she is!
