ABC’s Galavant Brings Musical And Comedy Together #ABCTVEvent #Galavant

Galavant GFX

Tonight, get ready to laugh and sing along as you enjoy the tunes and comedy of ABC’s Galavant. During my trip to LA in November, I had the chance to check out Galavant and I just knew I was going to be a huge fan. Galavant is the new musical comedy, that is coming to ABC for the next four weeks. Even better, than just getting a new show, you are getting two episodes per week.

Joshua Sasse Interview

After we screened the first episode, we had surprise visitor, Joshua Sasse, who plays Galavant. He was welcomed with a few “ohhhhs and ahhhs”, but seeing a handsome Englishman will do that to a girl. I wondered if this were the first musical Joshua had ever done, which it was not. As an actor in England, he said, you have to have your strings in a fair amount of boats to get anywhere, so he had performed some things at the West End in England. Though, when he heard about Galavant, he didn’t realize it was going to be a musical at first. Luckily, that performing he has done in the past, helped to land him this role, a role I could not see another person in, to be honest.

Dan Fogleman

We also got to chat with Executive Producer is Dan Fogelman, who was the writer for movies you are likely to know and love! Bolt, Cars, Cars 2, Fred Clause, and Tangled. How do you know if this show is for you? According to Dan “Those who like Month Python, Princess Bride or Game of Thrones, are more likely to like this show than those that don’t! It’s like Monty Python and The Princess Bride had a baby!” I have to say after watching it, I agree completely. The passion Dan had for this show, will make it a hit.

Everything was shot in England and what you see in the show is 100% real. With the help of Alan Menken (composer) & Glenn Slater (lyricist), Galavant is something that was truly and work of many people. They all said it was a group effort but that everything seemed to flow together.

Alan Menken

Alan Menken

Alan and Glenn said there were a total of 24 songs, but with reprises that number is actually 33. However, as you can expect, there were many more that did not make the show, due to time constraints. After working on Tangled, by the time they got to this, it was pretty much short hand. It was a such collaboration between Dan, Glen and Alan. According to Alan “The truth is the best musicals are very economical. When you look at Little Shop of Horrors, you can’t get through a page of the script where there isn’t a lyric AND a scene. And this form is quite akin to that. So, it’s pretty comfortable compared to doing something like Tangled. One of the strongest characteristics you need to have is the willingness to throw stuff out immediately. Don’t ever get emotionally attached to anything. Everybody in this process basically has that attitude.”

Which, according to Josh, you almost want to get angry sometimes, because he heard a song Alan created for Beauty and The Beast that did not make it to the movie and said it was beautiful!

KAREN DAVID, JOSHUA SASSE, DAN FOGELMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER), LUKE YOUNGBLOOD, JOHN STAMOS, KAREN DAVID

While this was the first time I had heard of the star Joshua Sasse, there will be stars you know appearing through the 8 episode run! John Stamos, Ricky Gervais, Weird Al Yankovich, just to name a few! I can’t wait to see what they bring to the already hilarious table.

One thing, to note, about the show is there are a few bits of adult themed humor. Don’t let that scare you, though! According to Dan, they wanted to push the envelope, but not too far. They don’t want it to be uncomfortable for parents to have their 10 year old watching. Here is the opening song, that touches on some of those moments so you can see for yourself the kind of humor that will be throughout the show:

I laughed throughout the first two episodes and definitely have my DVR set to record every single one of them. You can join in the musical fun too, starting tonight! Galavant” premieres tonight, SUNDAY, JANUARY 4 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) and will run two episodes in the one-hour block each week on ABC!
