A Fresh Telling Of An Old Tale

Top Disclosure

Whenever you want a great story, you can’t go too far wrong by revisiting one of the classic fairy tales. That’s exactly what director Bryan Singer has done with his latest film, Jack the Giant Slayer

As you might have guessed, the plot is loosely based on the fairy tale Jack and the Giant Beanstalk, so if you’re planning on taking the kids to see this fantasy adventure film, then a few readings of the original story will give them a reasonable idea of what to expect.

However, remember it’s also a story in its own right. Nicholas Holt (About a Boy, Skins) is the star of the show and plays Jack the farm hand who accidentally opens a portal between two worlds – that of the humans and that of the giants. In doing so he gets the princess of his world kidnapped by the giants and also puts the kingdom he lives in at risk from being overrun with giants. Fortunately, Jack is up for the challenge of putting everything back the way it should be, saving the girl and winning her heart!

Ian McShane plays King Brahmwell, who is not at all pleased that his daughter the princess is falling for a farm boy. Meanwhile Princess Isabelle is played by Eleanor Tomlinson (actress in Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging). Other roles are played by Bill Nighy and Ewan McGregor, so it’s a Brit-heavy cast.

Parents who take the kids to see this movie will be rewarded with spectacular shots of the British countryside – much of the location scenes were filmed in Somerset, Gloucestershire and Norfolk. You might even be tempted to book a holiday to the UK to visit some of the places that appear in the film!

Jack the Giant Slayer is now playing at movie theatres and can be found on Edinburgh cinema listings and in other regions throughout the UK and the US.
