When you eat your food, do you think about the people who play a big part in making it available to you. Today I want to introduce you to one of the families who have been chosen as one of America’s Farmers …The Martin Family
A fourth-generation farmer, Matt Martin grew up in Kingman, Indiana, where he had an opportunity to work alongside his grandfather, Gene, on the land he purchased in the late 1940s. Matt quickly fell in love with the farming lifestyle, and now he runs the operation alongside his best friend and father, Larry.
Matt and his wife, Lisa, have three children, all of whom have expressed interest in returning to the farm when they graduate from college. But in particular, the Martins love the family aspect of their farm, living and working together on a daily basis.
The Martin family takes on growing corn and soybeans. When I read their story, I loved seeing that farming had been in their family for generations. While, I have not had any farming experience personally, blame my lack of green thumb, I do know generations past have farmed. I am so thankful for those that take on this job..and it is a job. I venture to say, there are not many people who work as hard a job as a farmer.
Matt’s wife, Lisa, said something that really resonated with me “OUR FAMILY IS KNIT TOGETHER IN A WAY THAT MUST BE UNIQUE. I’M DISCOVERING THAT MORE AND MORE…WE’RE ALL EACH OTHER’S BEST FRIENDS.”. I loved that. With farming being such a tedious job, it has the potential to go one way or the other when it comes to family and I love hearing that this brings their family much closer together. Check out this video to learn a little bit more about the Martin family:
With their kids having expressed an interest in returning to the farm, after college, I believe this farm will be family run for generations to come. I, would like to say thank you to the Martin family and all the other farmers, for their hard work. You give so much of yourself so that we can put food on our table and clothes on our backs. Thank you for all you do!
What would you like to say to a farmer today?
