Prayer…it’s such an important part of my daily life, but I admit, sometimes I feel like I don’t know what to do or say. I feel like maybe my prayers aren’t good enough. So, when I was asked if I wanted to review Max Lucado’s “Before Amen” The Power of A Simple Prayer, I, of course said yes. I feel like I can always use help with my prayer life, so I jumped right into the book.
Prayer is such a necessity for my life, but it definitely doesn’t come naturally. But what we need to remember it’s not about making a prayer that is “My God, thou art omnipotent, with thy holy hands…” you get my drift. Thinking that is the way to pray, is sure to scare anyone off. It’s not about that at all, it’s about simply spending time with him and that is exactly what Max Lucado teaches us in “Before Amen”
The 9 chapter book comes with a study guide to help you implement what you are taught in the book! It’s an easy read, but one that will help you get a grasp to realize prayer isn’t as scary as we tend to make it out to be. We think “I can’t pray, I don’t know how” and that’s exactly what this book teaches…how to pray. In fact the pocket prayer Max teaches us at the beginning of the book is all we really need to get started!
The chapters include: The Pocket Prayer, Father…….Daddy, You Are Good, I Need Help, Heal Me, Forgive Me, They Need Help, Thank You, and In Jesus’ Name, Amen. Each chapter is geared after the pocket prayer itself, but Max breaks down how to go a little more deep with each ‘section’. Max gets real with us in the first few sentences talking about how his thoughts drift, he gets distracted, or thinks of other things he needs to do. I can most definitely relate to that.
It’s not easy to admit I don’t know how to pray…I am a christian that means I should have it all together and be ‘homies’ with God right. Well, a homie I am, but I don’t have it all together and my prayer life is something I struggle with. I get busy, I for get to thank God daily for His blessings because I am afraid of messing up. This book has reminded me it’s just simply about spending time with my creator, the one who cares so much for me that, even though He is watching over the world…He wants to take time every day to spend with me.
Because I want to grow, I have to spend time with God, I can’t let my insecurities about praying wrong take over…I have to remember I am not being judged but instead I am being welcomed into his arms, so He can love on me. And that is why I am so thankful to have had the chance to read this book. If you, like me, feel like you are doing it all wrong when it comes to praying, please go pick up a copy of this book today. If you don’t want to read and do the study alone, reach out and I’ll do it again with you!
Do you feel like you could use help with your prayer life?
Note: I received a free copy of this book from Family Christian for the purpose of review. The opinions are my own.
