Meet The Voice of Disney’s MOANA

2016 has a lot of exciting Disney fun in store. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am for Finding Dory, but after that I can’t wait for Disney’s MOANA.

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one today knows why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated adventure about a spirited teenager who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master Wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”), and produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.

Voice of Moana

Newcomer and native Hawaiian, Auli’i Cravalho, will be voicing the title character. Alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Auli’i will bring Moana to life.

Hundreds of Pacific Islanders were hoping to voice the main character, and Cravalho was not one of them. Her focus being on her sophomore high school year, she didn’t think she would have a chance. She loved to dance and sing when growing up, but thinking she would voice, a sure to be popular Disney character, Cravalho never imagined she would be the star of a Disney movie. Lucky for her, she was wrong!

Moana’s casting director remembered her from a past audition, when she was part of an acapella group who auditioned for a talent showcase, for charity. The casting director felt she would be perfect for the role and went to work tracking her and her mother down, to invite her to audition for the role. “Her audition was fantastic – she was such a raw talent,” said producer Osnat Shurer. “Auli’i was among a small number of girls we brought back for a second round of auditions. Then we flew her and her mom over to audition at our studios in Burbank.”

“Auli’i demonstrated a certain fearlessness in her auditions and call-backs,” said director John Musker. “She has a playful, mischievous wit. She can project vulnerability, she doesn’t seem intimidated at all by the challenges ahead, and her Polynesian background has helped shape her connection to family, hard work and music. These are all qualities she shares with Moana.”

“Moana is a vibrant, tenacious 16-year-old growing up on an island where voyaging is forbidden,” added director Ron Clements. “But Moana has been drawn to the ocean since she can remember and is desperate to find out what’s beyond the confines of her island.”

After hearing everything the directors and producers have to say about Auli’i, I have a feeling this won’t be the last time we see or hear from her! She has already started recording for the role, and you can see her character come to life when Disney’s Moana hits theaters November 23, 2016!
