The holidays are fast approaching and for us (and millions of others) that means travel. While some fly, it’s too expensive for our family of 5 to do that, so we drive. This Christmas we will be heading back to Arkansas for the first time, since moving to Florida. Because there is a good chance of snow I want to make sure our vehicle is in tip top shape AND because it is a TWELVE hour drive, I want to make sure the inside of the vehicle is travel ready. Today I wanted to share with you a few tips we have for Holiday and Seasonal travel and a great deal from Hankook Tires.
- First Aid Kit. You never know when cut, a nosebleed, or anything else will happen where you will need some kind of first aid products. Buy (or make your own) a first aid kit to have on hand just in case.
- Pillows and Covers. During our travels, especially trips that are over two hours, we make sure to have each kid bring a pillow and a cover. They will get tired and want to sleep and the complaining will start about not having somewhere soft to lay there head. With five people in the car, tempature temperaments can vary. The way we solve the “I’m too cold, it’s hot” arguement is to crank the AC and have each person bring a cover. We aren’t sweating like crazy, they don’t freeze.
- Snacks. Five minutes into a trip and I can almost guarantee I will get an “I’m hungry”. The best way to avoid this is pack a small cooler for shorter trips with easy snacks. If it is going to be a trip like our 12 hour drive, then a larger cooler with picnic style foods (sandwich supplies, chips, fruits, crackers) will come in handy. Less stops means not adding time to the already long venture.
- Movies Save My Sanity. After an hour in the car it’s like a little switch goes off and the kids start nitpicking everything, they argue, fight and it makes a trip unbearable for all. Thankfully we have invested in a few DVD players and the kids can turn on their own movies and the parents get to ride in peace. Not to mention it has saved us quite a bit from “Are we there yet”. Time passes much faster to them when they are immersed in a movie.
- Maintenance! Be sure all your care maintenance is up to date. Check the fluids, wipers, and of course tires. We don’t want any breakdowns or blow outs half way into the trip!
