One of the things I have been so proud of my kids over as they have been in school (outside of their grades of course) is their penmanship. Somehow, they all had beautiful handwriting for their ages. I distinctly remember them being bragged on by teachers and how impressed I was with how easy I could read different things. One day my daughter came home from first grade and I opened up her folder and couldn’t believe my eyes.
What happened to the handwriting!! It was illegible, messy, not what I was used to seeing and their was a note from the teacher “Work on handwriting, practice at home” or something similar. I started looking through the rest of her folder and it clicked, every page was written with handwriting that I was not used to seeing…then I realized (as I finally took the time to look at the name in the corner) that it was not my daughters work. She had accidentally picked up another child’s folder.
Another mishap happened to my younger son. We were all ready to go, early in fact, and I dropped my daughter off and headed to drop my son off at his school. That morning he had chosen a sporty outfit of red/black athletic shorts and a black t-shirt. As he got out of the car, I was driving off and I noticed that it wasn’t his plain black tee but instead one that had a pocket design and he had put it on backwards. I couldn’t stop and he would have cringed had I yelled the fix out the window, so I was that mom that let their kid go to school with a shirt backwards.
I have since realized the importance of labels. It will help save my daughter from bringing home another students folder and tag labels for clothing will make sure we get our clothes on the correct way. Not to mention, if something like a jacket, hat, lunchbox, etc is left at school there is now a way for the school to know who it belongs to.
Here are a few back to school tips so hopefully you can have an easy entry back into the school year.
- Get labels. This is an obvious one since you just read my story but I can’t reiterate enough how much these will work for you. Whether you are saving your child’s pencil, their shoes, or extra clothes you send with them for field days, you will be happy you had them labeled.
- Do what you can the night before. Here we have a very early start time of 7:15 a.m. What I like to do is pack everything but the sandwich (or any other refrigerated items) the night before. I can worry about getting the kids up, dressed and only making the cold part of their lunch in the morning.
- Box it up. My kids each have a box under our counter that they can put their backpack, lunchbox, shoes, and jacket into when they get home. That way the stuff we need for school days is right there to grab when we need it.
- Dry-erase boards. These are great to write on at the beginning of each week what tests, homework, and practices are coming up so at a glance, I, and my kids know what we need to be doing.
Back to school is a bit chaotic so I have to take steps to make it a little less stressful. I hope my tips help you in an easier back to school experience!
