There is so much work that goes into a Disney animated movie, so being able to sit down with Art Hernandez, the Head of Story, and Lawrence Gong, the Story Artist for Planes: Fire & Rescue, was amazing. Until you sit down with a story artist, you don’t realize just how much goes into making an animated movie. After having had the chance to screen Planes: Fire and Rescue, it was all the more amazing. Even better, I had the chance to try my hand at drawing Dipper, one of the main characters in the movie, myself.
This movie was being worked on for years, there is so much work that goes into it. These artists are so talented, they make it look easy. It’s amazing to see how they take simple shapes and lines and create the characters who come to life on screen. Surely, if they can draw Dipper in about five minute…even this non-artist can do it too, right??!!
Okay, maybe not so much…I tried at least. I have my very own, hand drawn version of Dipper. I have no art bone in my body , but I was able to get something similar to her, I was pretty proud. I tried to pass off the little fire jumper guy as my drawing to my daughter, she knew better LOL.
With so much counting on the drawings, to make the movie a success, the artists are hand picked for each movie. Just like the voices are cast, so are the artists. You might have one artist that is perfect for delicate scenes while another is perfect for those action packed sequences. In the end, how they choose the artists for each scene and/or character will determine the quality of the movie we see…which is always great when it comes to Disney.
Planes: Fire and Rescue is no different. It was amazing to see the detail drawn into things like the fire, the eyes, and even the emotions that come through. Who knew drawing could be so fantastic! When you have the right talent (meaning not this girl right here) amazing things can happen and that is just the case with Planes: Fire and Rescue!
Making Planes: Fire and Rescue, wasn’t a super easy task. There are several screenings, where changes may have to be made. They hope the changes are minimum, but what makes the Disney movies so great, is the fact they apply the changes, because they want the best for the Disney fans out there. It’s so interesting to see all the processes of conception to the screen. I, for one, am thankful Disney picks the best of the best, because of that my family has and will continue to enjoy Disney movie for years.
Planes: Fire and Rescue will be in theaters July 18 and this is one movie you won’t want to miss!
