Hello to all my Quotable Sunday Peeps! So glad you are joining in again this week, I promise to make my way around to every single person that participates by the end of Sunday (this is subject to change if we ever get a huge insane amount of people doing this of course). As always for you newbies (if there are any) the rules:
- Post one or more of your fave quotes on your blog.
- Come to here and link to you post in Mister Linky
- Check back all day for the new adds in mister linky and go give some comment love to the other quote heads π
My quotes for this week are “Be Yourself” quotes. I have noticed this week just on the web and in my daily life that people are not trying hard enough to be themselves. So onto my quotes:
To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting. ~e.e. cummings, 1955
Ah how very true, it’s so easy to conform in today’s society. It takes a strong person to be true to who they are.
He who trims himself to suit everyone will soon whittle himself away. ~Raymond Hull
I can atest for a long time in my life I used to try to fit what people wanted me to be and I lived a miserable life. It wasn’t until I stood my ground and lived for me instead of for others that I really started enjoying life. Did I lose friends when I quit being what they wanted me to, absolutely but they weren’t friends I needed in my life anyways.
All my life I had been looking for something, and everywhere I turned someone tried to tell me what it was. I accepted their answers too, though they were often in contradiction and even self-contradictory. I was naΓΒ―ve. I was looking for myself and asking everyone except myself questions which I, and only I, could answer. It took me a long time and much painful boomeranging of my expectations to achieve a realization everyone else appears to have been born with: that I am nobody but myself. ~Ralph Ellison, “Battle Royal”
No thought needed on this one, it makes you think π
It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are. ~e.e. cummings
Well this is another one that really applied to my life the last few months. I had to do some very hard things and had to move on from some things/people and that took a lot of courage. It’s so easy to stay somewhere you feel comfortable but there is much more to gain when you take a stand and grow up and realize that some people/things should never have been in your life. It’s not an easy task but the rewards in the end are worth the hard times you may have with whatever decision you are facing.
“Be yourself” is about the worst advice you can give some people. ~Tom Masson
Okay so I know this sort of contradicts my other quotes but it is true as well, there are some people well plainly put who just are bad people, who are selfish, have hateful hearts and will do what they can to step on people just to make themselves more powerful and those are the kind of people we need to encourage to change who they are and work on getting a new “yourself” so then they can be themselves π
So what are some battles you have faced when trying to remain true to who you are?

What a great theme for your quotes today! I still don’t know for sure what I’m doing….but I’ll have something, I promise!
Great quotes again this week, Toni! I think my favorite is this one:
“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” ~e.e. cummings
So very true…there was a time in my life I had to be courageous and become me in spite of any backlash I might have feared, or losing friends/people in my life – that in retrospect really didn’t belong in the first place. It wasn’t easy, but you are so right…the rewards in the end are so worth it! Besides, I like who I am now, Me, I definitely didn’t like who I was then… π
