One of my favorite things about my husband are his awesome daddy abilities. After a long day of work and the kids want to play a, later than usual, game of farkle, he is willing. Spending time with them in the house, outdoors, watching their favorite movie with them, or a hearing him read a bedtime story, I fall more in love with him when I see him taking time out for our kids.
Having that bond with a dad is so very important, not just when they are young, but as they grow. Father’s are who most sons grow up to be like, daughters look to their dads for guidance in certain areas of life. My daughter loves to read and be read to, whether it’s myself or my husband that is one of her big bonding times, so we were excited to receive “Because I’m Your Dad” by Ahmet Zappa to review with her. As Father’s Day approaches, I can’t think of a more appropriate book for my husband to share with our kids.
Ahmet Zappa is the son of late rock musician/composer Frank Zappa and, as he puts it, “My awesome mother, Gail.” Because I’m Your Dad is both a tribute to his happy childhood and a promise to his daughter, Halo. Ahmet grew up with a learning disability and now writes books to help children discover how wonderful reading can be. Through his production company, Monsterfoot Productions, Ahmet has developed several television shows and movies, including “The Odd Life of Timothy Green.**which happens to be one of my kids favorite movies**
Ahmet seems to have a great grasp on family and “Because I’m Your Dad” is a fun, silly way for dads and kids to bond.
In a text that’s both playful and loving, a father expresses his hopes and dreams for a one-of-a-kind relationship with his child. Whimsical monster characters bring the silly and sweet scenes to life and keep the book universal. The book’s ending, a moving tribute to the author’s father, guarantees intergenerational appeal.
Because I’m your dad you can have spaghetti for breakfast. Because I’m your dad I’ll go to all your soccer games even when they are far away. Because I’m your dad, I will do all of these things for you and more because that’s what my dad did for me.
The book, even though silly, is very touching. I may or may not have teared up when reading it for the first time.
