I had to wear glasses when I was growing up, and while my vision seemed to better itself as I aged, I do still have to wear glasses for reading and being on the computer for long periods of time. Having grown up knowing the importance of eye care I knew it was something I would definitely do my best to stay on top of when I had kids of my own. As a parent it’s easy to remember to take them to the doctor and dentist, but sometimes eye care can slip by without us thinking about it, but it’s essential for us parents to make sure we are doing the best for our kids and eye care is part of that.
Both my boys had perfect vision, which means so far we haven’t had to go the glasses route with them. Then came my daughter, she is her own little person and lets the world know it. Standing out is what she does best. When we took her to the eye doctor for the first time, it was because of her school administered eye test. See I told you, it’s easy to forget…I, the one who wore glasses, forgot to take my kids in for an eye exam until they were school age! Thankfully I got her in quickly after the school eye test and we found out why she was having headaches and a hard time with reading. She had astigmatism. We, luckily, caught it early enough the eye doctor is optimistic treatment will help correct it.
She doesn’t mind, though, she loves to showcase her style with fun glasses.
I want to make sure I stay on top of all my kids eye health so, in the event, they need glasses/contact, I am not risking making it worse by leaving it untreated. Check out a few tips we all would do good to remember (me included):
- Parents should take their children to the eye doctor for a comprehensive eye exam starting as young as six months old, then again at three years old, before kindergarten and every year after that.
- In-school screenings do not provide the same level of detection as comprehensive eye exams.
- 80 percent of what we learn is through our eyes, making an eye exam essential for your back-to-school “to do” list.
- Common signs of vision problems include squinting, head tilting, avoiding “close work,” trouble focusing, continuous rubbing of eyes, and headaches.
- 1 in 4 children has an undetected vision condition that can negatively impact learning.
Taking preventative measures and treating kids (and yourself for that matter) is important when it comes to eye care. Taking the time to learn more about eye care health and putting what you learn into actions is the first step to better eye care. Don’t wait until it’s too late, start your kids early with eye care so they can grow up with the best eyesight possible! Look into vision benefits, schedule annual eye exams, and stay on top of eye care, because your kids eyes are how they will see the world!

She looks adorable in her glasses!
All three of us wear corrective lenses, so I take eye care seriously. My parents didn’t catch my vision impairment until I was 12, so I made sure that we took our daughter to the optometrist early, and sure enough she already needed glasses when she was 7.
My son wears glasses and is so funny – he wears them low on the bridge of his nose. I don’t know how effective they are that way.
Thankfully my children are good in this department for now.
She knows how to work those glasses! She’s adorable! I always had perfect vision until I hit 40, now need reading glasses, but my husband has worn glass most his entire life. Our son is 10 and *knocks wood* has perfect vision. It is easy to forget eye care, though.
I think she absolutely rocks her glasses and looks adorable! My kids visit the eye doctor once a year for a checkup. So far none of them need glasses.
You’re so smart to stay on top of that. I guess because I wear glasses I am really aware of the importance of eye health, but not everyone is so thanks for talking about it!
