Book Review: The Truth

The_Truth_cover

I was asked to review The Truth(I’m a Girl, I’m Smart and I know everything) by: Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein (psychologist). I was excited when I dived into the book because it reminded me of when I was a girl. As a young girl, I used to journal everything! I wanted to share my feelings with the world and yet was afraid to at the same time. I wanted to be heard and have someone tell me all I was going through was normal. I wanted to be understood.

“The Girl” in this book talks about everything from falling in love to wanting to be able to ask her mother questions about growing up. She talks about “mean girls” and what she wants to do when she grows up. At the very end she makes a list of things she promises to do when she grows up and they all come directly from experiences she went through or things she feels like she missed.

“The Girl” really captures the feelings of what I remember to be when I was 10 years old and I really think this is a must read for most girls 8-12 years old. They all question family, friends and feelings when they are that age. I know I did and I am sure my daughter will as well, it is just something that comes with the territory of growing up.

The Truth (I’m a Girl, I’m Smart and I know everything) is a book that is going to make that journey a little easier and have you daughter realizing they are not the only one to have these feelings or go through some situations in life. This book is also good for parents because it will make you ask yourself if you are doing what is best for your child’s life or are you doing anything that may be affecting my child negatively.

I will be holding onto this book and giving it to my daughter when she is in the appropiate age to read it and I hope that she enjoys it and gets as much out of it as I did. I highly suggest this book to moms of daughters and get them to read it as well. Then take the time to answer the questions at the end of the book, it’s always great to sit and have discussions as a mother/daughter group.

Thanks for hosting Dr. Barbara this month. I enjoyed both the women’s and girl’s version of this book. I’m going to tuck the girl’s one away for when my daughters get a little older.
